يُعدّ الاستماع للابنة المراهقة من أهمّ الأمور اللازمة لتحديد كيفيّة التّعامل معها، إلى جانب ضرورة الابتعاد عن الحكم، أو الاستهزاء، أو المقاطعة، أو النّقد، وما إلى ذلك من الأمور أثناء حديثها، كما تحتاج المراهقة إلى الفهم والتّقدير، لذا لا بدّ من الحفاظ على التّواصل البصريّ معها، والتّركيز على ما تقوله، والابتعاد عن كلّ مشتتات الانتباه كقراءة الصّحيفة، أو تصفّح البريد الإلكترونيّ.[2]

يلجأ العديد من الآباء إلى قراءة الكتب أو استشارة خبراء خارجيين فيما يختصُّ بتربية أبنائهم المراهقين، وهذا لا يُعدّ خطئاً ما لم تَحلُّ تلك الوسائل محلَّ المهارات الفطريّة للآباء وغرائزهم، إذ يقول روبرت إيفانز (Robert Evans) مؤلّف كتاب الوسائل الأسريّة: "إذا لم تكن التوصيات متلائمة مع أسلوب المراهقين الشخصيّ، فإن الآباء يشعرون بالقلق ويُصبحون أقل ثقة بأبنائهم المراهقين"، لذا لا بدّ من استخدام الكتب للحصول على انطباع حول السلوك المُربك، ثم وضع الكتاب جانباً، والقيام بما يلزم لتحقيق الخيارات الأكثر أهميّة للعائلة ككل.[3]
