Jean de La Fontaine est né le 8 juillet 1621, à Château-Thierry. Ses fables en ont fait un des poètes les plus originaux de notre littérature ; sa vie était aussi originale que son génie : c'est un des écrivains qui se font le mieux aimer par leurs livres, et dont l'on désire le plus connaître la personne et la conduite.
Son enfance n'offrit rien de remarquable. Il arriva jusqu'à l'âge de vingt-deux ans sans que ni sa famille, ni ses amis, ni lui-même, se doutassent de son génie. Sa vocation poétique lui fut révélée la première fois par la lecture de Malherbe, qu'il entendit lire à un officier en garnison à Château-Thierry : il se passionna pour ce poète, qu'il apprenait par cœur la nuit, qu'il allait déclamer le jour dans les bois ; il voulut même l'imiter, mais son bon goût l'arrêta : Il pensa me gâter, dit-il.

A cette lecture il joignit celle de Rabelais et de Marot ; puis un de ses parents lui fit connaître quelques auteurs anciens, Térence, Horace, Quintilien, Plutarque et Platon ; ces deux derniers surtout étaient ses auteurs favoris. La littérature italienne était fort en vogue du temps de La Fontaine, il en prit aussi le goût : Elle le divertissait beaucoup, disait-il ; il avait une prédilection particulière pour les comédies de Machiavel, pour l'Arioste et Boccace.

Le temps de La Fontaine se passait à lire tous les auteurs que nous venons de nommer, à faire quelques vers et à rimer, quand son père lui transmit sa charge de maître des eaux et forêts, et le maria. La Fontaine se laissa faire ; il s'occupait fort peu de son emploi et de sa femme, Marie Héricart. La Fontaine mangeait son fond et son revenu, comme il le dit dans son épitaphe ; mais il fut toujours soutenu par l'amitié.

Malgré sa paresse et son insouciance, il savait trouver le courage pour défendre ses amis et ses bienfaiteurs quand ils étaient malheureux. Louis XIV venait de disgracier le surintendant Fouquet, qui protégeait La Fontaine : la foule des courtisans s'éloignait du ministre déchu ; La Fontaine, seul, avec l'avocat Pellisson, osa, dans une touchante élégie adressée au roi, plaindre le sort de Fouquet et demander sa grâce.

Malgré toutes les pensions que le poète recevait, il était toujours pauvre et dénué de tout, à force d'insouciance et de dissipation, lorsque madame de La Sablière le prit chez elle, et le garantit de tous les embarras et des soins de sa vie. La Fontaine passa chez cette dame, qu'il a immortalisée dans ses vers, les vingt années les plus heureuses de son existence, et composa auprès d'elle la plupart de ses chefs-d'œuvre. Il fut reçu à l'Académie le 2 mai 1684 : il avait déjà publié les six premiers livres de ses fables en 1668, le poème d'Adonis et Psyché en 1669, le poème de la Captivité de saint Malo en 1673, le poème du Quinquina en 1682.

La Fontaine remplaçait Colbert à l'Académie, et l'avait emporté sur Boileau, son concurrent. Louis XIV, mécontent de l'élection du fabuliste, refusa longtemps de la ratifier ; il se fit présenter au roi, auquel il voulut donner lui-même une pièce de vers, afin d'obtenir son autorisation. Il est introduit devant Louis XIV, mais il cherche vainement sa pièce de vers : il l'avait oubliée. « Monsieur de La Fontaine, ce sera pour une autre fois » lui dit le roi.

On ferait un long recueil de toutes les naïvetés et de toutes les distractions de La Fontaine. Après la mort de madame de la Sablière, il se trouvait sans asile ; Monsieur et madame d'Hervart vinrent pour lui offrir un logement chez eux ; ils le rencontrent dans la rue : « Venez loger chez nous, lui disent-ils. - J'y allais », répond La Fontaine.

En 1692 il tomba dangereusement malade, et se convertit à la vie chrétienne. Il brûla à cette époque une comédie, et fit publiquement amende honorable de ses écrits licencieux ; depuis, il n'a plus composé que des sujets religieux. Il est mort le 13 avril 1695.

Dans le monde, La Fontaine était distrait, rêveur, préoccupé. Il se laissait difficilement aller à la conversation ; cependant quelquefois il s'animait, alors sa causerie était charmante de grâce, d'esprit naïf et de bonhomie. Les femmes surtout recherchaient sa société. Il travaillait beaucoup ses fables ; les traits en apparence les plus simples, les plus facilement spirituels, lui demandaient force patience. Un des plus grands poètes de notre époque, Béranger, a été souvent cité pour sa ressemblance de génie et de caractère avec le fabuliste.

Outre ses fables, La Fontaine a composé une imitation de Térence ; quatre comédies, dont une seule, le Florentin, est restée au théâtre, deux opéras ; des poèmes, des odes, des élégies, des balades, des contes, des épîtres, des épigrammes ; mais ses fables sont les chefs-d'œuvre qui l'ont immortalisé.
