تشير الأرقام إلى أن أكثر من ربع الأطفال الذين تتراوح أعمارهم ما بين 9 و17 سنة يتواصلون مع أشخاص مجهولي الهوية. حيث يتخذ الأشخاص ذوي الميولات الجنسية الشاذة من منصات الألعاب المباشرة ملاذً يمكنهم من تحديد فريستهم من الأطفال بشكل لا يلفت الأنظار ولا يدع مجالاً للكشف الصريح عن هوياتهم.

هكذا، يقومون باستدراج الأطفال، سواء بغرض لقائهم شخصياً والاعتداء عليهم جنسياً أو بغرض إرغامهم على تزويدهم بصور في وضعيات جنسية مخلة يتخذونها فيما بعد وسيلة لابتزازهم مادياً أو معنوياً أو يقومون ببيع هذه المحتويات المخلة فيما بعد على مواقع مخصصة لهذه الأغراض.

هذا لا يعني أن الطفل يوجد دائماً في خانة المرغمين في مثل هذه الحوادث، فقد يكون أيضاً من بين المحرضين لهذه التصرفات أو المعجبين بها. وذلك من خلال تسجيله للإعجاب بمثل هذه المحتويات أو نشرها على العالم الافتراضي وهو ما يؤثر سلباً على شخصيته، لكنه في جميع الحالات يظل ضحية سوء إستعمال هذه الوسائل وقلة مراقبة المربيين له سواء الوالدين أو المدرسة أوغيرها.
